Upon taking office, United States senators must swear or affirm that they will “support and defend the Constitution.” The oath is required by the Constitution; the wording is prescribed by law.

While our own Sen. Susan Collins looks on, President Donald Trump has ignored the Russian attacks on the sanctity of our voting system, weakened the intelligence agencies of the country, made us more vulnerable to foreign enemies, undercut our principal law enforcement organizations, defied the courts, undermined a free press, enriched himself and generally trampled the Constitution.

When will Collins remember her solemn oath to “support and defend the Constitution”? Our democracy is under attack and our country deserves more than her silence.
