I want to thank everyone who helped make the June 28 open house on Clapboard Island East such a success. Twelve volunteers delivered over 150 visitors from Town Landing to the island in four hours Saturday morning. Another 50 arrived in kayaks, paddle boards, dinghies, and a giant rowboat which pulled up on the beach.

Visitors ate bagels and juice at the picnic table and then set off. Some walked around the eastern half of the island, little children played on the beach, and many watched a pair of juvenile bald eagles test their wings on their nest, the only bald eagle nest in Falmouth. The weather was warm, clear, and calm, contributing to the magical atmosphere.

I want especially to thank Falmouth Land Trust, Maine Coast Heritage Trust, Friends of Clapboard Island, and Bernie’s Foreside for refreshments, tours, and boat rides. We couldn’t have done it without you. Clapboard Island East will be open to the public after Aug. 15.
