I write in response to Benjamin Stevens’ letter last week, asking whether my status as a teacher in Yarmouth presents a conflict to serving on Yarmouth Town Council. Mr. Stevens’ question is legitimate. I’m glad to respond.

The short answer is, I would not waste the town’s time were I not confident I was able to serve. Before running I reached out to Town Manager Nat Tupper and Superintendent of Schools Andrew Dolloff. They contacted the town’s and school’s attorneys, who replied I could indeed serve on the council since councilors are not involved in negotiating school contracts, but simply vote up or down on the entire school budget.

I’m happy I’m legally and ethically able to serve. I’m even happier to run to serve our vibrant, welcoming town. I believe my voice, my temperament – and yes, my experience in Yarmouth schools – would benefit our town in this time of change.
