I want to thank Karen Campbell for her service on the School Administrative District 51 Board of Directors. She distinguished herself as a board member who was hard working, thoughtful and focused on problem solving throughout her term.

High quality education does not happen by accident; it takes hard work and dedication. Devoted volunteers like Karen, working with teachers, administrators, students and their families, have continued the long tradition of excellent public education that originally attracted us to Cumberland 28 years ago. Although our own children are now out of SAD 51, we are grateful for the education they received and we remain strong supporters of the system.

A well-educated population is central to the success of our country, and this burden initially rests primarily with local communities. As taxpayers we see the cost of that burden very clearly. It is money well spent and SAD 51 has done a great job at providing a quality product while watching the bottom line. A recent editorial in the Portland paper by Tim Hussey and Bob Moore, two of Maine’s leading businessmen, highlighted the importance of a strong educational system to Maine’s economy. It is a theme that is echoed by business leaders throughout the country. We all benefited from the strong school system built by our predecessors. Let’s all do our part to keep it going.
