President Trump’s proposed budget for FY 2019 aims to drastically cut funding for the EPA. At a time when extreme weather is becoming more and more common, our oceans are rising due to warming water temperatures, and our air is becoming dirtier from pollution, we should be increasing funding for the EPA to provide protections to our environment, not eliminating it.

The EPA works to maintain our air and water quality in Maine. Former Maine Sen. Ed Muskie worked to pass the original Clean Air Act, providing us with clean air to breathe. Less pollution leads to less asthma and other health problems. As the tailpipe of the nation, Maine is particularly susceptible to air pollution, since it moves from around the nation to Maine. We deserve clean air for the health and safety of ourselves and our children.

I urge Sens. Angus King and Susan Collins to oppose a FY 2019 budget that includes slashing EPA, and instead work on a budget that aims to protect Maine’s air, water and special places.
