The Brunswick Park & Gardens article last month stated that Herschel Sternlieb, visionary and founder of BP&G, said “the project was a for-profit business.” This gives the impression that BP&G is out to make money, when in fact it cannot because of its tax-exempt status.

The BP&G Business Plan of 2010 clearly states that “The BP&G is a Maine not-for-profit non-membership corporation with a Federal 501C-3 tax-exempt status.” The next paragraph goes on to say “Profits from the Gardens will be used for the benefit of the citizens of Greater Brunswick.”

It is important for the public to understand that any monies generated over and above those required for operation and maintenance of BP&G revert to the community, probably in the form of scholarships or other support for education. The philosophy behind this endeavor is that the greater Brunswick Community is to be the beneficiary of BP&G.
