Biking in Harpswell, on Route 123 on Harpswell Neck, and on Route 24 on Orr’s and Bailey Island is very hazardous. The roads are hilly, windy, and two-lane, with pathetically narrow “bike lanes” bordering the right shoulders to allow bicycle passage. Cars and trucks traveling at 30-50 mph (depending on the speed limit) pass, often with very narrow leeway. The bike lanes and shoulders are often in gross disrepair. Broken-down and pot-holed pavement cannot be ridden on, forcing the biker to the left into the line of traffic. Please, let’s give the bicycle riders a fair chance at surviving what is supposed to be an enjoyable experience. The roads need repaving with appropriate space for bikes to ride on, as is their right.
