The letter from Barry Stephens reminds me that I haven’t thanked Edgar Allen Beem for his well-researched and illuminating columns.

As with most Trumpeteers, Stephens believes that enthusiasm and right-wing jingoism are a substitute for facts and history. For instance, he forgets that Barack Obama inherited an economy in recession from the last disastrous Republican administration. Donald Trump, on the other hand, and in spite of his criticism of Obama, was handed a relatively healthy economy. However, in Trump’s egoistic zeal to recreate the post-war boom of the 1950s, he and the Republican Congress have pushed through an irresponsible “tax reform” and are busy trashing the environment (for the benefit of petrochemical company profits and to the detriment of the rest of us). And to further recreate the 1950s and placate his base, Trump has nurtured and legitimized the rise of racism, sexism, xenophobia and homophobia. And oh, yeah, there are “some good people” among the Nazi right. What a legacy.

So, thank you, Edgar. Please keep writing.
