We know that our natural resources are finite, yet the opportunity to curb unsustainable consumption and make more environmentally conscious choices seem to allude us. But we can change that on Nov. 8 if Topsham residents vote yes on Questions 1 and 2.

A fee on single-use bags is a gentle reminder of that opportunity to make a conscious decision about our consumption that we wouldn’t have made if the bag was free, while a ban on polystyrene foam food containers presents us with safer and more environmentally friendly alternatives we would not have considered before.

Both of these ordinances will have positive effects on the targeted areas of commerce, and an even greater impact on the way consumers think about plastic bag consumption and sustainable practices in many other aspects of their lives. That is why I support these ordinances.
