Some read last week that I referred to Falmouth Democrats as evil. Some also read the state ethics panel is investigating an alleged conspiracy. Their target? The Falmouth Democratic Committee.

The Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices is investigating whether the committee should have registered as a political action committee with all the attendant legal requirements and strict governmental regulation. The investigation specifically stems from the committee’s endorsement of Cathy Breen in the Senate District 25 Democratic primary. The ethics complaint was brought by the opposing Democrat, Steve Woods, who feels the Falmouth Democratic Committee acted improperly. The ethics panel, after reading Woods’ complaint, felt it was of merit, and voted to investigate.

The timing of my comment and the filing of the complaint are not coincidental. I did know the Democrat had filed the complaint. I think I know its tone. But my word choice was unartful, a word carefully crafted by Democrat Hillary Clinton. I simply sought to strongly emphasize that I feel Falmouth’s Democratic leadership often acts arrogantly.

And candidate Breen’s response to the investigation reveals that attitude. Regarding the committee’s endorsement, she said “but that’s in no way unusual. That’s what they do in every election cycle.” That makes it right? Well, it does make an investigation get underway.
