“We have no plans to bring tar sands oil to South Portland.” That is what the oil interests are telling us. I for one think that is an outright lie. Why do I say that? Well, the Canadian government just passed a law allowing the Montreal pipeline to be reversed and to send oil to South Portland when it has always gone in the opposite direction. Second, we are now being bombarded with newspaper ads extolling the benefits of Canadian tar sands oil. The logic they use is almost humorous: people in Maine need energy (duh). Why don’t they tell us that the tar sands oil isn’t destined for Maine, but for export to foreign countries? As a newspaper, please let me know in advance when the tar sands oil is coming, because I want to be the first one to sell my residence and move. How stupid do they think we are?
