My husband and I want to thank the South Portland City Council for its commitment to protect us from tar sands. I suffer from asthma and heart disease and would hate to live in a city that was polluted. We love Maine and appreciate how it’s one of the last unspoiled places to live in the United States. Our daughter is a South Portland High School graduate who has gone from Southern Maine Community College to the University of Maine at Machias to become a marine biologist. She once showed us how delicate and light baby lobsters are, so now we know they would not be able to survive an oil spill. Tar sands would hurt the air quality for us and our neighbors, destroy the restaurant and tourism industry here, contribute to climate change and also negatively effect property values. It feels good to know that there are other concerned citizens like us who we can count on who want to protect and preserve our beautiful way of life.
