The town of Scarborough is to be commended on providing additional parking on the Eastern Trail where the old sewer treatment plant was. It is good to see that the town is following the Comprehensive Plan in providing increased access to recreation by providing this increased parking area along with retaining the current spaces.

One of the great benefits of The Eastern Trail is that it is level. The elderly, the moms pushing strollers, the bikers and the runners and the people using wheelchairs or walkers don’t have to worry about hills.

A much-needed improvement would be providing designated handicap parking spaces. Since the overflow lot is somewhat downhill, the spaces should be up on the level. The town has a 2,500-square-foot deeded easement on property at the start of the trail for “turning and other public uses. ” I would suggest that area be used for level, surfaced and ADA-compliant handicap spaces.
