The regular season is winding down in basketball and hockey and the postseason is set to begin in the other sports.

There will be a lot of drama in store and plenty of hardware handed out in the weeks to come.

Here’s a glimpse at the week that was and a look ahead:

Girls’ basketball

The basketball regular season culminates Thursday and Brunswick’s girls’ squad, the defending Class A South champion, was battling Greely for the top seed in the region at press time. The Dragons improved to 16-0 with wins last week over visiting Lincoln Academy (63-25) and host Biddeford (73-37). After facing a key test at Edward Little Tuesday, Brunswick finished at rival Mt. Ararat Thursday.

Mt. Ararat was 4-12 and 10th in the region at press time, but only nine teams qualify for the postseason. The Eagles beat host Camden Hills (66-52) and lost at Leavitt (52-48) last week. Mt. Ararat was at Medomak Valley Tuesday and closed at home versus Brunswick Thursday.

Morse was 3-13 and eighth in Class A South entering Tuesday’s home game against Cony. Last week, the Shipbuilders lost at home to Maranacook (48-40) and at Leavitt (47-34). They closed at Camden Hills Thursday.

In Class C South, Hyde was 4-11 and 15th at press time, but only 14 teams qualify. The Phoenix lost last week to visiting St. Dom’s (52-21) and Hebron Academy (41-23) and host Kents Hill (36-26). Hyde was home with Pine Tree Academy Tuesday and Kents Hill Wednesday to end the season.

The postseason begins next week with preliminary round games, held on the home courts of the higher seeds.

Boys’ basketball

On the boys’ side, Brunswick was 11-5 and seventh in Class A South following a 64-54 win at Lincoln Academy and a 67-58 home loss to Biddeford last week. The Dragons were home with Edward Little Tuesday and finished the regular season at Mt. Ararat Thursday.

Mt. Ararat was 7-10 and 10th in the region, where only nine teams make the playoffs, after a 52-51 home win over Camden Hills and losses to visiting Leavitt (65-57) and Medomak Valley (71-58). The Eagles closed at home against Brunswick Thursday.

Morse began the week 2-14 and 12th in Class A South following a 91-53 loss at Maranacook and a 62-51 home win over Leavitt. The Shipbuilders were at Cony Tuesday and closed at home versus Camden Hills Thursday.

Boys’ hockey

Brunswick began the week 6-8 and was sixth in the Class B South Heals (six teams make the playoffs in the region). Last week, the Dragons lost at home to Yarmouth (5-1) and won at Mt. Ararat/Morse/Lisbon (4-3). Brunswick hosts York Friday and visits Gardiner Wednesday of next week.

The Mt. Ararat/Morse/Lisbon co-op team was 6-8 and seventh in Class A North (where only six teams make the postseason) following a 4-0 win at Cony and a 4-3 home loss to Brunswick. The squad was at Windham/Westbrook Thursday and hosts Massabesic Tuesday of next week.

Girls’ hockey

The girls’ hockey postseason is underway.

Brunswick finished the season 7-11 and fifth in the North Region following a 3-1 win at Falmouth and a 6-4 victory at Mt. Ararat/Morse. The Dragons went to fourth-ranked Winslow/Gardiner (11-6-1) for a quarterfinal round game Wednesday. If Brunswick prevailed, it will visit top-ranked Lewiston (16-2) in the semifinals Friday.

Looking ahead, the regional final will be held Wednesday, Feb. 14 in Lewiston.

The state final is Saturday, Feb. 17 in Lewiston.

Mt. Ararat/Morse finished 2-16 and eighth in the region (only six teams made the playoffs) following losses at Winslow/Gardiner (7-3) and at home to Brunswick (6-4).

Indoor track

Brunswick’s boys and Mt. Ararat’s girls won an eight-team regular season-ending KVAC meet last weekend. The Eagles boys were second while Morse placed ninth. On the girls’ side, Brunswick was sixth and Morse eighth.

The KVAC championship meet is Saturday at Bowdoin College in Brunswick.

The Class A state meet is Monday, Feb. 19, in Gorham.

Swimming

Brunswick’s boys’ swim team won its season finale, 86-73, over Cony, while the girls lost to the Rams, 114-56.

Morse’s boys beat Belfast, 53-45.

Mt. Ararat’s boys lost to Camden Hills, 112-45, and the girls were defeated by the Windjammers, 115-53.

The KVAC championship meet is Saturday in Bath.

The Class A boys’ state meet is Saturday, Feb. 17 in Orono. The Class A girls’ state meet is Monday, Feb. 19 in Orono. That same day, the Class B girls’ state meet will be contested at Bowdoin College in Brunswick. The Class B boys’ state meet is Tuesday, Feb. 20 in Brunswick.

Wrestling

The Morse/Wiscasset co-op team was sixth and the Mt. Ararat/Brunswick co-op squad placed seventh at last weekend’s KVAC championship meet.

The regional meet is Saturday in Oxford.

The state meet is Saturday, Feb. 17 in Sanford.
