BRUNSWICK — Leo A. Messier, 92, of Katherine Street, died peacefully Dec. 17 at Mid Coast Hospital, surrounded by his family after a brief illness.

He was born in Brunswick Jan. 30, 1923, a son of Francois and Claudia Philippon Messier and was educated in local schools.

Messier served as a quartermaster in the Navy during World War II.

On May 3, 1947, he married Gisele J. Lavoie.

Messier worked for Trueworgy Furniture before buying and operating Messier’s Grocerette with his brother, Paul. He later owned Driftwood Inn before going to work at Bath Iron Works for 20 years, retiring in 1989.

He was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and was a member of the Brunswick Knights of Columbus.

Messier enjoyed gardening, bike riding, fishing, taking walks, the Patriots and Red Sox, playing in a bowling league and the company of his cat, Cody. When he was younger, Messier enjoyed downhill skiing with his family. He was also very clever when it came to fixing things. He especially looked forward to Monday lunches with his buddy, Roy Holmblad.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 58 years, Gisele; a son, Dennis P. Messier; and two brothers, Phillip Messier and Paul W. Messier, as well as a close friend, Venise Lewis.

Surviving are two sons, Thomas L. Messier, of Brunswick, his fiance, Virginia Campbell, of Phippsburg, and Michael D. Messier of Brunswick; a daughter, Karen A. Dodson, of Harpswell; a granddaughter, Felicia M. Messier of Brunswick; two sisters, Fabienne Coulombe and Louise Beaulieu, both of Brunswick; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Dec. 22 at St. John the Baptist Church in Brunswick.
