PORTLAND — City Councilor Cheryl Leeman, a two-time mayor, longtime councilor and former School Committee member, Tuesday announced she will not seek re-election this fall.
“Although I have enjoyed my work on the City Council, I am calling it quits. I plan to spend more time with family and friends, travel and enjoy life,” Leeman said in a press release.
Leeman was first elected to her District 4 seat in the East Deering section of the city 30 years ago, after serving one, three-year term on the School Committee.
Leeman also headed the Portland office of former U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, and said Snowe’s decision to step down contributed to her own decision not to run again for the council.
“Having retired from the office of Sen. Olympia Snowe a little over a year ago, after 18 years, and having survived breast cancer, has given me pause to think about what to do with the rest of my life,” Leeman said.
