Cape Elizabeth’s Austin Legge repeated as the Class B boys’ champion after producing an 18-hole round of 69, three strokes better than Erskine Academy’s Connor Paine.

Legge trailed Paine by a stroke after 11 holes but played his final seven holes in 5-under, with an eagle and three birdies.

“I hit a couple good shots on the first hole and made the eagle putt and that was a huge momentum boost and then I started making a bunch of putts from then on out,” Legge said. “(Paine) was very, very steady and I had kind of a rocky start, so I knew I needed to make some birdies.”

In the Class A boys’ competition, won by Mt. Ararat’s Caleb Manuel (69), Scarborough’s Anthony Burnham, last year’s champion, placed third with a round of 73, Ethan Mason (76) tied Cheverus’ Tom Higgins for fifth place, Peter Malia (79) tied Mt. Ararat’s Will Kavanaugh for ninth and Cam Chamberlain (82) tied Andrew Klein of Greely for 13th place.

In the girls’ meet, won by Greely’s Rachel Smith, Cape Elizabeth’s Mia Spencer shot a round of 86 and placed fifth.

The Red Storm beat the visiting Stags, 2-0, Oct. 3, and had won two of three previous playoff encounters, with a 3-0 victory in the 2012 regional final the most recent.

Football

Scarborough’s football team improved to 5-1 after last week’s 41-8 win at Lewiston.  Touchdown passes of 34- and 7-yards from Chase Cleary to Jared Quintiliani made it 14-0 after one quarter. A 10-yard Jarett Flaker TD run and a 1-yard dive by Cleary extended the advantage to 27-0 at halftime. A 63-yard Flaker run and a two-point Cleary conversion rush made it 35-0 after three periods. Cleary added one more score, a 45-yard run, in the fourth period before the Blue Devils scored their lone points of the game.

The Red Storm (fourth in the hotly contested Class A South Heal Points standings) close at home with a pivotal contest against visiting 5-2 Bonny Eagle Friday (see theforecaster.net for game story).
