PORTLAND — Owners of residential rental properties have until Jan. 1, 2016, to register with the new city Housing Safety Office and pay required fees.
The maximum fee per unit is $35, with discounts available for fully sprinkled buildings, alarm systems that are centrally monitored, smoke-free policies, and inspections by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The minimum fee is $15.
The Housing Safety Office was approved in June by the City Council and will be funded by the registration fees. The department, headed by Art Howe, will also have an administrator and three inspectors and is setting up procedures to inspect all city rental units.
