SCARBOROUGH — The Scarborough Kiwanis Club named each of three Wentworth Intermediate School teachers a Hero of the Quarter.

Janeen Chin, Catherine Hewitt and Karin Kelly were nominated for the award by Wentworth Principal Kelli Crosby because of their added involvement in the Wentworth School Garden Club, according to a Dec. 17 press release.

“The result of their passion, hard work and dedication to the school garden has surpassed every expectation,” Crosby said in the release.

Chin, Hewitt and Kelly led the dismantling of the school garden at the former site of the Wentworth School so it could be rebuilt at the current location, still off Gorham Road, which Crosby called a “monumental task.”

“By engaging students and other staff members, and members of the community in the planning and creation of a new school garden, these three women have transformed a triangular swatch of chain link-encased grass into a beautiful outdoor classroom,” Crosby said.

The garden now includes raised beds, a greenhouse and a new garden shed with kitchen space, an information kiosk and four picnic tables, Crosby said, and students have already harvested vegetables to use in the cafeteria.

“Ms. Hewitt, Ms. Chin and Mrs. Kelly provide a positive example for all students about the importance of becoming stewards of the Earth,” Crosby said. “Their vision and elbow grease have created a beautiful outdoor classroom that staff, students and the community will enjoy for many years.”
