PORTLAND — The nominees for 2014 Maine Teacher of the Year include a teacher from King Middle School.

Karen MacDonald began working for Portland Public Schools in 1978 as an ed tech. She later moving to the gifted and talented programs at Longfellow Elementary School and Lincoln Middle School, and fourth and fifth grades at the former Baxter and Nathan Clifford elementary schools.

MacDonald has been teaching at King Middle School, where she is a sixth- and seventh-grade language arts teacher, since 1989.

The Maine Department of Education announced the 14 nominees for Maine Teacher of the Year last week. A winner will be revealed at a surprise celebration in September.
