FREEPORT — An original member of the Regional School Unit 5 Board of Directors has resigned.

Brenda Kielty, who has served on the board since the RSU was formed in 2009, announced her resignation on July 29.

Kielty said she resigned because she is moving from Freeport to Portland next month. Her term on the School Board expires in November.

Board Chairman Nelson Larkin said Kielty was a valuable member of the board and he is sorry to see her go.

Kielty, an attorney, has lived in Freeport for 20 years. She has worked as the public access ombudsman for the attorney general’s office since last fall, and said her son will continue to attend school in Freeport.

Whether the vacant seat on the School Board will be filled for the remainder of Kielty’s term will be discussed by the Town Council at its next meeting on Aug. 20.

The council recently hired two consultants to study the financial and educational impacts of withdrawing from the RSU, which includes Durham and Pownal.

Kielty declined to discuss the town’s withdrawal study.
