SOUTH PORTLAND — Kathy J. Carmichael, 57, of South Portland, died of pancreatic cancer April 11 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, in Scarborough.

She was born Oct. 28, 1955, the daughter of Merlin and Joanne Carmichael. She grew up in South Portland, graduating from South Portland High School. After that, she took classes at North Shore Community College and later studied engineering design drafting at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Carmichael’s hobbies included knitting, rug making and cooking, and she was an avid participant in the virtual Second Life community.

She was a close supportive companion to her mother over the years, and also enjoyed her cat Milo.

Carmichael was predeceased by her father. She is survived by her mother, her brother Steven, her sister Jan, and her sister Elizabeth. The family would like to thank all her caregivers at Mercy Hospital Oncology Center and the Gosnell House.

A private service will be held and interment will be at a later date at Brooklawn Memorial Park in Portland.
