Kathleen M. (Markley) Rice, 60: Respected paralegal, accomplished dancer

PORTLAND — Kathleen M. (Markley) Rice, 60, devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and best friend, died Sept. 8 from colon cancer.

Born in Portland on July 22, 1951, a daughter of James and Mary (Fields) Markley, she was a member of the last graduating class of Cathedral High School.

She was a highly regarded paralegal who worked for Jenson, Baird & Gardiner, Amerling & Burns, and Bernstein, Shur, Sawyer & Nelson.

An accomplished dancer, she performed for many years with a dance studio in Gray.

She and her husband, Terry, loved to travel, especially in South America and Mexico.

A special woman whose kind and generous heart touched everyone around her, she loved her family and took the time to make everyone feel special.

The family would like to thank the staff at Mercy Oncology, especially Dr. Roger Inhorn and Cathy Gallant for the excellent care and support they provided. They would also like to thank the staff of The Gosnell Memorial Hospice for their incredible care and kindness.

Her loving husband, Terrance V. Rice, predeceased her in 2000.

Surviving are her son, Anthony Gasc and his wife Kary of Gray; her adored grandson, Alexander Gasc; sister, Patricia Guimond of South Portland, and brothers, James Markley and his wife Dorie of Vernon, Conn., Thomas Markley and wife Brenda of Falmouth, Joseph Markley and wife Peggy of Portland and Timothy Markley and wife Susan of Falmouth; and many nieces and nephews.
 
Family and friends are invited to visit from 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 13, at Independent Death Care, 660 Brighton Ave., Portland.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 14 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Congress Street in Portland.
