FREEPORT — Kathleen M. “Kate” Denney, 41, died peacefully with her husband George by her side Feb. 28 at Maine Medical Center after a 12-year battle with cancer.

Born on July 5, 1968, in West Islip, N.Y., she was a daughter of Mary Lou (Murrin) and Frank O’Connell.

In 1991 she graduated from Salve Regina University with a bachelor’s degree in human resources. Three years later she married her college sweetheart, George S. Denney, and settled in Maine.

She worked as a buyer for Cole-Haan Footwear in Yarmouth.

Her interests included boating, cooking, visiting family and friends, and spending time with her dog, Rudder.

She is survived by her husband of 16 years, George; her parents, Frank and Mary Lou O’Connell of Sayville, N.Y.; her brother, Kenneth O’Connell of Sayville, NY; two sisters, Maureen Sawyer of Bellport, N.Y. and Mary Dolan of Bayport, N.Y.; many nieces and nephews; and longtime friends, Susan Tweedy, Kathleen Cox Riccio and Jeanene Cole.

A visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, March 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist Funeral Home, 1 Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth.

A Mass of Christian burial was Thursday Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 326 Main St., Yarmouth, with a reception to follow in the church hall. 

Her husband, George, created a memorial of her life which can be viewed at lindquistfuneralhome.com, where condolences and memories can be shared.
