The number of surviving fall sports teams in the Mid-Coast keeps shrinking, but title hopes remained at press time.

Football

Brunswick’s football team, the top-ranked squad in Eastern Class B, had a bye last weekend and will host fourth-ranked Messalonskee (5-4) in Friday’s semifinals. The 7-1 Dragons suffered their only regular season loss, 20-7, at the Eagles Oct. 10. If victorious, Brunswick will host either No. 2 Cony (6-2) or third-ranked Lawrence (7-2) in the regional final Nov. 14 or 15. The Dragons won at the Rams, 52-27, Sept. 19 and handled the visiting Bulldogs, 34-14, Oct. 17.

The Class B state final is Saturday, Nov. 22 at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland.

Morse earned the No. 6 seed in Western B, but was quickly sent packing by third-ranked Falmouth, 48-6, to finish the year 4-5.

Boys’ soccer

On the pitch, the Brunswick boys earned the No. 2 seed in Eastern A. After handling visiting No. 7 Messalonskee, 3-0, in the quarterfinals last Tuesday, the Dragons ousted defending regional champion, Hampden Academy, the number three seed, , Saturday. 4-1. That sent Brunswick (12-2-2) to top-ranked Lewiston (15-0-1) for the Eastern A Final Wednesday. The teams played to a 2-2 draw in Brunswick Oct. 2.

If the Dragons advanced to states, they would face either two-time defending champion Scarborough (15-0-1) or Cinderella upstart Cheverus (9-4-4) Saturday at 3 p.m. at Hampden Academy.

Mt. Ararat, the No. 5 seed, dropped a 1-0 quarterfinal round decision at fourth-ranked Bangor last Tuesday to finish 8-5-2.

Girls’ soccer

On the girls’ side, Mt. Ararat, the fifth seed, was a 2-1 upset winner at fourth-ranked Hampden Academy in the quarterfinals, then dominated top-ranked Bangor in Saturday’s semifinals, 5-0, to earn a spot in Wednesday’s regional final at No. 2 Edward Little (12-1-3). The Eagles and host Red Eddies played to a 2-2 tie back on Sept. 16 in Auburn.

If victorious, Mt. Ararat will meet either defending state champion Windham (15-0-1) or perennial powerhouse Scarborough (14-1-1) in Saturday’s Class A Final. The game begins at 5:30 p.m., at Hampden Academy.

Brunswick, ranked third in Eastern A, ousted No. 6 Messalonskee, 2-0, in the quarterfinals, then lost, 3-1, at second-ranked Edward Little in Saturday’s semifinals to finish 10-4-2.

Morse, the No. 6 seed in Western B, was ousted at third-ranked Cape Elizabeth, the defending state champion, 6-1, in the quarterfinals and finished the year 9-4-2.

Cross country

The cross country state championship meet was held Saturday in Belfast.

In the Class A girls’ meet, Brunswick had 149 points to place fourth (Scarborough was first with 92). The Dragons put two individuals in the top 10, as Tessa Cassidy came in third (19 minutes, 29.11 seconds) and Tiffany Tanner was seventh (19:54.66). Mt. Ararat’s 286 points placed it 11th. The Eagles were led by Katherine Leckbee (fourth, 19:33.24).

In the boys’ meet, also won by Scarborough (with 73 points), Brunswick had 307 points and was 14th, while Mt. Ararat placed 15th with 335. The Dragons top finisher was John Murphy (37th, 17:26.04). The Eagles fastest runner was Matt Gott (38th, 17:31.14).

In Class B girls action, won by Greely with 59 points, Morse (261) placed 11th. The Shipbuilders were led by Maris Silvestri (40th, 21:44.97). The Morse boys didn’t qualify. Freeport won that meet.
