PORTLAND — Josephine Atlass, 88, died April 13.

She was born March 22, 1926, in New York City.

She attended New York schools and graduated from Hunter College. She married Hadley Atlass in 1950 and raised two sons in New York. In 1971, they moved to Orr’s Island and purchased the Little Island Motel.  First with her husband until his death in 1987, and later with the great help of local women and her lifelong friend, Mary Manypenny, she operated the motel for 40 years until her recent retirement.

She loved the museums, theater and the arts, but her favorite recent activity was dining at the local restaurants.

She was predeceased by her husband Hadley and a son, Ronald.

She is survived by a son, Richie and wife, Lorraine, of Portland; grandchildren, Amy Higgins, and Chet and Chris Meehan, of Portland; and three great-grandchildren.
