BRUNSWICK — Joseph H. Murray, Sr., 80, of Brunswick, died March 27 at the Mid Coast Senior Health Center surrounded by his loving family.

On Aug. 7, 1930, he was born in Portland,  the son of Fred B. and Allison Kennedy Murray, and attended Portland schools.

During the 1960s he worked as a police officer in Freeport, before beginning a long career with L.L.Bean as a retail store manager and security supervisor, among other positions.  

Passionate about fly fishing and hunting, he enjoyed teaching for the L.L.Bean Fly Fishing School where he was able to share his knowledge and passion for the outdoors.

On Sept. 9, 1949, he married Elinor Greer, and lived in Brunswick for six years before moving to Freeport, where they resided for 44 years.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Elinor Murray of Brunswick; five children, Joseph H. Murray, Jr., and his wife Nancy of Brunswick, Paul Murray and his wife Pamela of New Gloucester, Kevin Murray and his wife Kim of Freeport, Jon Murray and his wife April of Clinton, and Karen McElhaney and her husband Dale of Durham; 10 grandchildren;  and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, at the Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal St., Brunswick. A funeral service will be held at Brackett Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 31.  

Memorial donations may be made to the Midcoast Activity Fund, 58 Baribeau Dr., Brunswick, ME 04011.
