PORTLAND — Joseph Herbert Hopkins, 78, a lifelong resident of Portland, died April 12 at the Barron Center with his loving family by his side.

He was born in Portland on June 20, 1931, a son of Galen D. and Julia F. (Foley) Hopkins and educated in local schools.

In 1957, Joe married Jeanne Conroy at St. Joseph’s Church in Portland.

For 45 years he worked as a commercial fisherman off the shores of Maine, earning the nickname “Joe Fish.”

After retiring in 1994, he followed a daily routine of a 4 a.m. breakfast with friends at Becky’s Diner, followed by coffee at Anania’s Variety, a stop at Bob the Barber’s and then visits with friends and family all over greater Portland.

He was a member of the Portland Elks Lodge 188.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Martin and Richard Hopkins, a sister-in-law, Joanne Parks and a brother-in-law, Richard Conroy.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Jeanne Hopkins; two daughters, Karen Monaghan and her husband Matt of Portland, and Valerie Webster Cota and her husband Ken Cota of Falmouth; a sister, Patricia Rourke and her husband Jack of Portland; three granddaughters, Erin and Casey Monaghan of Portland, and Amy Webster of Falmouth, and two grandsons, Michael and Jonathan Webster of Falmouth; brothers-in-law, Thomas Conroy and his wife Constance of Portland, and Charles E. Conroy and his life partner Roy Anderson of Delaware; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held last week.

Arrangements are by Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland.

In appreciation for the compassionate care he received at the Barron Center, memorial donations may be made to the Barron Center Resident Activity Fund, 1145 Brighton Ave., Portland, ME 04103.
