PORTLAND — Although famed film director John Ford left Portland as Sean Feeney a century ago, his legacy will be celebrated Thursday at the Maine Irish Heritage Center.

The commemoration begins at 2 p.m. with a presentation and discussion of video essays on Ford’s work, created by Bates College film students.

At 6 p.m., Ford’s Academy Award-winning short film on the World War II battle of Midway will be screened, after an introduction by film historian Juris Ubans. Ford shot the documentary himself while serving as a naval officer.

The Maine Irish Heritage Center is at the corner of State and Gray streets. Admission is a suggested $5 donation; center members are admitted at no charge.
