PORTLAND — John Edward Bowman Sr., 90, of Portland, died peacefully Oct. 29 at his residence, with his family by his side.
He was born Nov. 20, 1922, in Portland, a son of George William and Cecilia Wolfe Bowman. He attended Sacred Heart Grammar School and was a 1942 Portland High School graduate. He was one of 10 children and one of five sons who served in World War II. He served in the Navy on the destroyer USS Charrett DD 581 with the Pacific Fleet.
Bowman married June M. Cole in March, 1946.
He was a life long communicant of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Church and was an active member of the Holy Name Society at the Church.
Bowman was a carpenter and was “clerk of the works” in the construction of the Franklin Towers and Casco Bank buildings in Portland. He was the business agent for the United Brotherhood of Carpenters & Joiners of America Local Union No. 517 for 12 years. He retired in 1982.
He enjoyed golfing with his wife at Riverside Golf Course for many years. They also enjoyed many years of square and round dancing. A hobby of his was collecting and repairing locks.
He was predeceased by his wife, June, April 5, 2012; four brothers, George, Raymond, Thomas and Robert; and four sisters, Mildred B. Guidoboni, Margaret B. Thibeault, Helen B. Templeton and Anna B. Foley.
He is survived by his daughter, Bonnie Lundquist, and husband, Arnold H., of Bar Harbor; son John Edward Jr., and wife, Shelia G. Bowman, of Portland; sister Virginia B. Remick; grandchildren John E. III, and wife, Deborah Bowman, Stephen, and wife, Chantell Bowman, Christopher, and wife, Katie Bowman, Eric Lundquist, and wife, Alison, and Caroline, and husband, Michael Noblet; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours were held Nov. 2 at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, Portland. Prayers recited and followed by a Mass of Christian burial at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Portland. Burial followed at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
