BRUNSWICK — John B. Long, 85, died Nov. 24 at Bodwell Nursing and Rehabilitation in Brunswick.

He was born on Nov. 19, 1924, in Corona, Calif..

After graduating from Riverside City College, he served in the U.S. Navy and fought in many battles at Leyte Gulf, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, as well as with the U.S. Occupation Forces in Japan.

He had a long career as a finance executive with Avco Financial Services.

After raising his family while living in California, Colorado, and Florida, he retired to Atlantic Beach, Fla., for 30 years before recently moving to Maine. He was especially fond of Bailey Island, where he purchased a home in 2005.

His interests included fishing, camping and traveling, reading and history. He also was an accomplished woodworker who built fine toys, boxes, and furniture.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara (Allan) Long; a son, John A. Long, of Hingham, Mass., and a daughter, Melinda DiSalvo, and husband Peter, of Roswell, Ga.; a grandson, Peter John DiSalvo; two sisters, Pat Anderson of California and Jeannie Mathews and her husband Chet of Arizona; a nephew, Kenny Baumgartner of Arizona; and several cousins.

A memorial service was held at Mid-Coast Presbyterian Church in Topsham on Tuesday.

A private burial service will be held at a later date.
