BRUNSWICK — Joan M. Coffin, 81, died Sept. 9 at Mid Coast Hospital.  She was born in New York City on July 15, 1931, the daughter of Russell and Loretta  Loucks.

She was educated in New York City schools and married Richard A. Coffin in February 1948. They resided in Gurnet and raised a family. Coffin worked for the school lunch program at Brunswick Junior High School.

Later, Coffin became an emergency medical technician and pursued a career in nursing at the age of 50. She graduated from the Central Maine Community College School of Nursing and worked as a charge nurse in the emergency room at Central Maine Medical Center for 16 years. Upon her retirement, she volunteered at the Mid Coast Hospital emergency room and gave compassionate care to her ex-husband, Richard.

Coffin enjoyed line dancing and was a member of the Senior’s Have Talent line dancing group.  
 
She is survived by daughter Linda C. Coffin and her husband, Paul Matthias, of Seekonk, Mass.; son Wayne Coffin and daughter Allyson Ammons, of Brunswick; grandson Zachary Coffin Matthias; daughter-in-law Susie Coffin; and many nieces and nephews.

Coffin was predeceased by her son, Vaughn Coffin.

Memorial visiting hours will be held on Satuday, Sept. 15, 12-2 p.m., at Stetson’s Funeral Home, 12 Federal St., Brunswick. Burial will be at a later date in New Meadows Cemetery, Brunswick.
