PORTLAND — Jennie Arlene VanScyoc, 86, died on Aug. 19.

VanScyoc was born on June 22, 1926 in Portland, the daughter of Wilfred and Mildred Noel.

In June 1945, she married Larry VanScyoc. Together they raised five children and a grandson.

VanScyoc worked for 20 years as a traffic guide for the Portland Police Department. Then, she went to work at Hannaford Bros. in Scarborough where she stayed for 22 years until her retirement at age 84. Her greatest achievement in life were her children and grandchildren. Being with them was her greatest joy.

VanScyoc was a congregant at the Second Parish Presbyterian Church.

She was predeceased by her husband, Larry; her children Gary, Larry, and Gloria; and a grandson, Gary II.

She is survived by her daughters Nancy Lee Adams and her husband, Ken, of Portland, Diana Queen and her husband, John, of Spartanburg, S.C.; eight grandchildren Ken III, Michael, Kevin, Brian, David, Samantha, Bobbi Jo and “Lil” Smit; and twelve great-grandchildren.

VanScyoc’s daughters thank Toni and the staff in the Libby Town unit and Ann Marie and the staff at the Barron Center for their devoted care and great compassion they showed to VanScyoc during her stay.

A funeral service was held Aug. 23  at A.T. Hutchins Portland. Burial was private by the family at Highland Memorial Gardens in South Portland.
