OLD ORCHARD BEACH — Jarryd Jay Leeks, 24, of Old Orchard Beach, died July 11 at his residence.

Leeks was born on Dec. 18, 1989, in New Bedford, Massachusetts, the son of Eric J. and Joelle S. (Ferreira) Leeks. He was educated in South Portland and Cape Elizabeth schools, and later attended Southern Maine Community College. There, he was named to the dean’s list in his last semester.

Leeks was a talented musician who taught himself guitar and how to “play” record turntables. He enjoyed performing his musical creations for the people he loved. His other passions included drawing and skateboarding.

He was known for his contagious smile, his lust for life, and the sacrifice he would make for family, friends and those in need. Perhaps more than anything, he enjoyed being a big brother to his sister, Jessamyn, and once even saved her life.

Leeks is survived by his parents, Eric J. Leeks, of Gorham, and Joelle S. Leeks, of South Portland; sister, Jessamyn Leeks, of Houston, Texas; half-sister, Lauren Reiss, of Denton, Texas; grandfather, Gerald Ferreira, of Tiverton, Rhode Island; grandmother, Valerie Mendell, and great-grandfather, Donald B. Mendell.

Visiting hours will be 1-4 p.m., Thursday, July 17, followed by 4 p.m. memorial service, at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Barbara Bush Children’s Cancer Hospital, Development Office, 22 Bramhall St., Portland, ME 04102.
