SCARBOROUGH — James McLane “Jay” Moody, 53, died Jan. 7 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House after an eight-year battle with cancer.

On May 2, 1956, he was born in Portland and attended Falmouth High School, Milton Academy, and graduated from Colby College, class of 1980. 

Trained as a geologist, he worked for Woodard and Curran in Portland.

An adventurous spirit, he enjoyed traveling and lived in Jackson Hole, Wyo., where he enjoyed the outdoors and made many life-long friends. 

After returning to Maine, he focused on raising his two boys who inherited his zest for life. 

Never letting his cancer diagnosis limit him, he lived life to the fullest and continued his passions for cycling, skiing, fly fishing, birding, gardening and hiking.  Over the past year, he hiked Mt. Kilimanjaro, saw his sons off to college and enjoyed his beloved state of Maine. 

An active environmentalist, he served on the Falmouth Planning Board, and helped dismantle the Presumpscot River dams.

His love for his many friends was one of the hallmarks of his life.  He was surrounded by friends and family for a special celebration in December and was overwhelmed to learn that he had inspired so many.

Surviving are his parents, William and Jane Moody of Falmouth; two sons, Benjamin James and Christopher McLane Moody; their mother Sue L. Moody; his brother William Milliken Moody, Jr., wife Kim and their daughter Caitlin of Yarmouth; his sister Susan, husband Marc and their daughter Elinor of Bozeman, Mont.; his sister Katharine and husband Kenneth of Newmarket, N.H.; and his loving companion Joan Lee.

A memorial service was held last week.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of Southern Maine, or the Maine Cancer Community Center.
