SCARBOROUGH — Jacqueline D. Butler, 88, died July 4 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House.

Butler was born on April 12, 1926, in Natick, Massachusetts, the daughter of Ira and Ida (Severson) Dean. She grew up in Wellesley, Massachusetts, and graduated from high school in 1943. After graduating from Mary Brooks Junior College in 1945 , she worked as a medical technician for Boston City Hospital, Haynes Contagious Hospital, and later the Eastern Maine General Hospital in Bangor.

She married Melvin M. Butler in 1947, and the couple raised a daughter, Cameron, and a son, Randall. The family lived in Lexington, Massachusetts, and Longmeadow, Massachusetts, before moving to Portland in 1959. Butler and her husband also built a family cottage at Cundy’s Harbor.

Butler enjoyed swimming, snorkeling, sailing, playing bridge and square dancing. She loved animals, wild or domestic, particularly her cats. In the kitchen, she loved to make jam, bread and desserts.

When her children were in high school, she returned to the medical field, working with a local physician for 16 years. The work allowed the family to travel extensively, visiting the Caribbean, England, Hawaii, New Zealand,  and Norway, where Butler’s grandparents had lived.

A memorial service was held this week at the First Congregational Church, 301 Cottage Road, South Portland

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Cundy’s Harbor Volunteer Fire and Rescue, Taylor Road, Harpswell, ME 04079.
