Traffic was backed up for five miles, several vehicles were damaged, but no one was hurt Friday, June 27, on Interstate 295 northbound, just beyond Exit 20 in Freeport, after a school bus broke down and pulled off the highway. Emergency responders said another bus arrived to pick up the children aboard the bus, and when the second bus slowed to pull off the highway, drivers behind it slammed on their brakes. An oil truck carrying 2,300 gallons swerved to avoid the slowed traffic, went over the shoulder and hit a ledge. A Chevrolet HHR was struck by a GMC pickup, pushing the Chevy into a tractor-trailer.

Freeport police talk to the drivers of the tractor-trailer, pickup and the other vehicle involved in the June 27 accident. The red vehicle on the wrecker was not involved.
