BATH — Investigators believe a fire that damaged a Washington Street home Monday morning was set intentionally by two young boys who live in the house.

Investigators determined that the fire was intentionally set in a below-grade addition to the home, Sgt. Ken Grimes of the state fire marshal’s office said Tuesday morning.

Firefighters were called just before 10:30 a.m. to a 2 1/2-story, single-family home set back from Washington Street between Beacon and Edwards streets.

The fire was largely contained to the basement, and firefighters used plastic sheeting to minimize smoke damage to other parts of the structure. Bath Fire Capt. Chris Cummings said the main part of the house appeared to be livable.

The boys suffered what Grimes described as “very minor burns” that did not require medical treatment.

An 11-year-old was detained on Monday afternoon and released to his mother. A younger child was not detained, according to Grimes.

No charges had been filed as of Tuesday. A juvenile community corrections officer will work with the district attorney’s office to determine how to proceed with the older child, Grimes said. The state Department of Health and Human Services was contacted about the younger child.

The assessed value of the home is $186,100, according to the Bath tax assessor’s office. An estimate of the damage was not available on Tuesday.
