The Portland Expo and University of Southern Maine in Gorham welcomed a new crop of indoor track and field athletes Friday and Saturday and local standouts made an immediate presence.

Friday night, at USM, Cape Elizabeth’s boys were third and the girls at a seven-team meet.

The Capers boys tallied 89 points, which left them behind York (259) and Greely (174). Deven Roberts won the junior high jump (5 feet). Jack Queeney took the senior 400 (57.74 seconds). Leo Ledman was tops in the open 800 (2 minutes, 11.97 seconds).

The girls had 68 points. Greely was first with 263. Cape Elizabeth had no individual event winners, its open 3,200 relay team came in first (10:56.27). Lauren Nicholson was runner-up in the open pole vault (6-6), Rachel Nichols was second in the mile (5:39.86) and the junior relay team finished behind Greely in 2:01.64.

Friday, the Capers compete against Falmouth, Freeport, Greely, NYA, Traip and Wells.

At the Expo, the Scarborough juggernaut produced wins on both the boys’ and girls’ sides, against Biddeford, McAuley and South Portland.

The girls had 119 points. Nicole Kirk took the senior 40 (5.5) and the senior 200 (29.6). Abby Chick was first in the senior 800 (2:40.0). Emelia Scheemaker took the senior 45 hurdles (7 seconds), the open 300 (42.4) and the open high jump (4-10). Morgan Rodway won the junior 40 (5.5).  Emily Tolman captured the open 600 (1:36.60) and the senior relay squad was first in 2:03.0.

South Portland finished third with 65 points. Sophia Desjardins was the winner of the junior 200 (30.5). Clara Ellis took the junior 400 (1:07.00). Angela Tirabassi captured the junior 800 (2:38.2). Ericka Lightner won the junior 45 hurdles (7 seconds).

The boys had 128.5 points in its easy win. In the junior division, Ryan Jamison took the 40 (5 seconds) and the 200 (25.6), Merrick Madden took the 45 hurdles (6.4) , Eric Woodbury won the shot put (36-4) and the 4×140 relay team was first in 1:06.2. In the senior division, winners included John Gonzalez in the 40 (4.8), Scott Merrill in the 400 (56.2), Nick Morris in the 800 (2:05.7), Orin James in the 45 hurdles (6.3) and the 4×280 relay team (2:20.9). In the open division, Joe Viola took the 300 (36.6), Robert Hall was first in the mile (4:59.9), Orin James won the high jump (4-10) and Zach Brown took the 600 (1:27.5). The Red Storm’s 4×210 relay was also first (1:40.9).  

South Portland was second with 54.5 points. Ryan Tuttle was first in the junior 400 (59.6). Adrian Reid won the senior 200 (26.4).

Saturday, Scarborough competes against Bonny Eagle, Deering and Marshwood, while South Portland goes up against Thornton Academy and Westbrook.
