BATH — Three incumbents are running opposed Nov. 5 for new terms on the City Council.

Councilor Mari Eosco of Washington Street is running again in Ward 5, Councilor Leverett “Tink” Mitchell of Old Brunswick Road is seeking re-election in Ward 7, and Councilor Steve Brackett of Middle Street is on the ballot again as an at-large candidate.

Eosco has served more than seven years on the panel.

She spent four years as director of Main Street Bath, as well as time on the boards of the Chocolate Church Arts Center, Skate Park and Main Street Bath, and on the Parking Committee. She has also been a corporator of Bath Savings Institution.

Mitchell served on the City Council from 2002-2005 before being elected again last year to complete the term of the late Councilor Ruthe Pagurko.

He retired in 2002 after 27 years with the Fire Department, where he spent the last four years as chief. He has also served on the Main Street Bath board and on a downtown parking committee.

Brackett has co-owned Brackett’s Market at 185 Front St. with his wife, Kimberly, for 17 years. The Georgia native is completing his first term on the City Council.

All three candidates voted in favor of two key decisions this past year, both made in April. One was to build an artificial turf field at the Edward J. McMann Outdoor Athletic Complex, which followed a major fundraising campaign by the Fields for Our Future Group. The project was approved 7-1, with Councilor David Sinclair opposed.

The other vote was to sell the Mid Coast Center for Higher Education to Phippsburg developer Robert Smith for nearly $800,000. That decision, which the council approved unanimously, received no public comment at time, but was later criticized by residents who claimed the city failed to practice due diligence in setting a price, and did not sell the building in an appropriate way.

The critics launched a short-lived petition drive to recall several city councilors, but the three councilors up for re-election in November were not among the targets.

The building’s buyer has now put the property on the market again, this time for $1.65 million. The city, meanwhile, has hired retired Maine Superior Court Justice Robert Crowley to investigate the sale.

Two seats are up for election on the Regional School Unit 1 Board of Directors, but only one person returned nomination papers by the deadline.

Alan Walton of Bath, who is completing his first term on the board, is uncontested for a second term as District 6 representative. No one is running from District 1, where Robin Buczkowski of Woolwich is finishing her first term.

RSU 1 has been seeking write-in candidates for District 1, which covers parts of Bath and Woolwich. Those interested, or who would like more information on district boundaries, can call the district office at 443-6601.

Polls will be open 8 a.m.-8 p.m. on Election Day at Bath Middle School. Absentee ballots are available through Oct. 31.
