TOPSHAM — Dr. Hugh Elliott Binks, 87, died May 29 after a short illness.
Born Aug. 31, 1922, in Elgin County, Ontario, he was the seventh of 13 children of George and Flossie Fulmer Binks and was raised on the family dairy farm.
During World War II he was an officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force.
On May 29, 1943, he married Verna Craig.
After the war, he attended Ontario Veterinary College, graduating in 1949. He moved to Kentucky with his wife and two small children to operate a country farm veterinary practice. In 1963, he accepted a position with the University of Maryland, where he served as Maryland State Veterinarian and retired as the Deputy Secretary of the Maryland Department of Agriculture.
He was active with numerous veterinary associations, Rotary Clubs and churches.
An avid reader with a sharp and inquisitive mind, he wrote books on animal health and his family genealogy.
He loved to garden and discovered genealogy as a hobby after moving to Maine in 2003.
He was predeceased by his first wife Verna in 1961, his second wife Rachel Rogers Ripy Binks in 2004, two stepsons, Michael and Bruce Ripy, three brothers, Carmen, Lloyd, and James, and four sisters, Freda O’Neil, Hazel Schnekenburger, Ruth Schnekenburger, and Madeline Swain, all of Ontario.
Survivors include a son, Douglas Binks and his wife Joann of Anderson, S.C., and a daughter, Gwendolyn Moore of Topsham; a grandson, Michael Binks; two brothers, Morley and Dalton Binks of Ontario, and three sisters, Eleanor Lymburner, and Teresa Bobier of Ontario, and Dorothy Roberts of Florida; and 45 nieces and nephews.
At his request, a simple graveside service will be held in Lawrenceburg, Ky.
The date for a memorial service in Maine has yet to be determined.
