SOUTH PORTLAND — Congregation Bet Ha’am, the city’s only synagogue, gained global acclaim in the eyes of the Huffington Post when website contributor Yasmine Hafiz named it one of the 50 most “stunning” synagogues and temples in the world.

The Reform Jewish congregation worships in a synagogue built in 2008 at 81 Westbrook St. in Thornton Heights. The Huffington Post designation puts the synagogue in the company of temples and synagogues in New York, San Francisco, Tel Aviv, Paris, Prague, and Florence.

Synagogue Executive Director Kris Dorer said there are about 350 congregation members. The synagogue was designed by Canadian architects Brigitte Shim and Howard Sutcliffe.

“The combination of modern utility, state-of-the-art design, and natural lighting results in a landmark not only in southern Maine but across the world,” Dorer said.
