SOUTH PORTLAND — The Police Department named a 25-year veteran its 2010 Officer of the Year.

Officer Adam Howard, who joined the force in in 1985, also won the award in 1996. He is  the department’s firearms instructor and landlord-tenant liaison, and has served on the department’s detective, narcotics and SWAT teams.

In a press release, the department said Howard was instrumental in investigating a string of auto thefts last year, working with several different agencies to recover stolen property and arrest a suspect.

Howard, who will be honored at the Feb. 23 City Council meeting, will receive two days off with pay, a personalized plaque and an award pin for his uniform.
