BRUNSWICK — All three political parties have selected new candidates to run for the Maine House District 66 seat in November.

At their caucus on Sunday, the Brunswick Democratic Town Committee unanimouosly chose Matthea Daughtry, 25.

Republicans, meanwhile, chose Grant Connors to replace John Bouchard, who is now running for the District 63 seat. According to the secratary of state’s office, Bouchard is eligible for the District 63 seat because he moved into the district on July 11, a day before the local GOP caucus.

The Green-Independent party previously replaced David Frans with Fred Horch, who narrowly lost to Rep. Alex Cornell du Houx, D-Brunswick, in 2010.

Daughtry replaces Cornell du Houx, who resigned from the race on June 29 as part of a settlement he reached with his former fiance, Rep. Erin Herbig, D-Belfast.

Although Cornell du Houx’s resignation from the race was the subject of much discussion, Daughtry said she believes she can overcome that to win the seat.

“It was a really unfortunate scenario and I’m really upset that it happened and also very aware that we need to move on as a community,” she said.

The Brunswick native spent the last five months working in Augusta as a communications associate with Maine’s Majority and said she was inspired by legislators’ ability to work across the aisle. But that’s not the main reason she’s running for office.

“I have lived in Brunswick my whole life, I am a product of this community and I’ve benefitted greatly from the various resources that exist here,” she said. “I feel it’s time to give back.”

Daughtry, who is a principal at the Maquoit Bay consulting firm, and a photographer and editor of her own food blog, Growing Up Julia, said she will focus her campaign on education, the environment and small business.

Andy Cashman, chairman of the Brunswick Democratic Town Committee, said Daughtry “has the passion to do great door-to-door (campaigning) and she’s very bright and is going to do great in the debates. I think the voters in (District) 66 will really connect with her and be as enthusiastic about her candidacy as we are.”

Neither Connors, Bouchard, nor a representative of the Republican Town Committee could be reached for comment.
