PORTLAND — A homeless man was arrested Monday on a charge of aggravated assault after police said he attacked a pedestrian who refused to give him money in Congress Square.

Richard Sneddon, 45, allegedly pushed and kicked Milo Lewis, 59, of the United Kingdom, as he was walking on Congress Street near High Street around 12:30 p.m.

Lt. James Sweatt said Lewis complained of leg pain after the attack and was transported to Maine Medical Center, where he underwent emergency surgery. He was expected to be hospitalized for several days.

Sneddon was arrested at about 6:30 p.m. in Monument Square and was being held at Cumberland County Jail on $1,000 bail. He was scheduled for an initial court appearance Wednesday.
