PORTLAND — A new schedule for the city’s high schools will be discussed at a community forum scheduled for Wednesday night, Jan. 20, at the Portland Exposition Building.

The proposed common high school schedule was drafted by a 28-member task force and presented to the School Committee on Dec. 16.

The new schedule is intended to maintain low-enrolled courses by combining staff and moving students; open the Portland Arts and Technology High School to more students; create more opportunities for multilingual students to accelerate their learning, and accommodate the biorhythms of teenagers by starting later in the day.

The new schedule also adds an extra period to the day to allow students to take additional courses or seek extra help.

The forum will begin at 7 p.m. Comments from the public will be included in a Feb. 24 presentation to the School Committee.
