While the basketball tournament (see story) will garner plenty of attention in the days to come, just about every other winter sport is in the process of determining champions as well.

Last week saw conference and region champions crowned and there’s plenty of hardware still to come.

Here’s a glimpse:

Girls’ hockey

All three local girls’ hockey teams made the playoffs, but bowed out last week.

In the South Region, Falmouth, ranked third, made it to the semifinals by knocking off sixth-seeded Portland/Deering, 7-1, in the quarterfinals last Wednesday. Kayla Sarazin led the way with four goals.

“I play midfield in lacrosse, so I think about playing both sides,” said Sarazin, an offensive-minded defenseman. “I lean toward defense, but if I have a chance to score, I’m definitely looking to shoot.”

“There aren’t enough great things I can say about (Kayla),” said Falmouth coach Rob Carrier. “I do know she didn’t want it to be her last game and she showed that on the ice.”

Friday, in the semifinal round, Falmouth was eliminated by second-seeded Scarborough, 5-2, despite two Sarazin goals.

“Scarborough’s strong and their will to win was greater than ours tonight,” Carrier said. “It was even until they pulled away at the end.

“(After the game) we wanted to make sure to tell (the girls) how much we appreciated how much they showed up willing to work hard. It stings right now, but they’ll remember the time they spent together.”

In the North Region, defending state champion Greely/Gray-New Gloucester, ranked sixth, had a short postseason stay this winter, losing, 9-1, at third-ranked St. Dom’s in last week’s quarterfinals to finish 6-13.

Yarmouth/Freeport, ranked fourth in the North, defeated No. 5 Winslow/Gardiner, 5-2, in the quarterfinals, as Olivia Bradford scored two goals.

Yarmouth/Freeport then lost, 8-0, at top-ranked Lewiston Saturday in the semifinals to finish the year 12-8. Goalie Allie Perrotta made a whopping 42 saves in defeat.

“It was a great season for us,” said Yarmouth/Freeport assistant coach Kelly Connors, who filled in for Meghan Vaughan, who was ill and missed the game. “Just from last year to this year, we had a better record and great seniors that worked their butts off and led us. We are really proud of them.”
