PORTLAND — Newcomer Stephanie Hatzenbuehler was elected to the open School Board seat in District 4. Hatzenbuehler defeated her opponent Rebecca Wartell 2,272 to xx993 on Tuesday for the three year term. Absentee ballots have not yet been counted.

Hatzenbeuhler, 37, is a social worker for Maine Medical Partners. Wartell, 27, is a community organizer and activist. Neither candidate had run for public office before.

The District 4 seat covers the area from Back Cove to Stevens and Allen avenues. The seat was previously held by Justin Costa, who is now a City Councilor.
