HARPSWELL — An 18-year-old driver was killed on Wednesday night when he swerved to avoid a deer on Route 123 in Harpswell.

According to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, Cameron L. Van Vlack lost control of his vehicle when a deer ran into the roadway. Van Vlack’s car hit a tree, flipped over, and struck a second tree with its roof. He died at the scene.

Police said no one else was in the car.

Van Vlack had been at Mt. Ararat High School in Topsham earlier that night for an adult education English class. According to Principal Craig King, he only needed one more class to receive his diploma.

He was a fixture on Mt. Ararat’s hockey team, having played all four years of high school. He was also active in the school’s Gay-Straight Alliance.

Grief counselors have been made available to Mt. Ararat students, and school officials have constructed a memory board where his peers can share their memories of Cam, as he was known.
