HARPSWELL — The town is accepting applications from groups that want to use West Harpswell School during the winter.

Interested organizations must disclose how much they will use the school, for what purpose, and for how long. They also have to estimate utility usage, the number of participants and the benefit to the community of their proposed activities. They must be affiliated with a nonprofit or for-profit group that will be responsible for costs or liabilities.

Even though the town is accepting applications, it will only allow the school to be used if at least 30 percent of the building is occupied on a regular basis – the minimum amount required to reduce the town’s insurance cost. If the town doesn’t get enough interest, the school will likely be closed during the winter.

The application only covers the period up to March 2012, when voters will decide what to do next with the school. Applications are is available at the Town Offices on Mountain Road.
